Rocky the 8 year old English Bulldog

Rocky had his back right leg amputated about two months ago.   He does not want to walk and if he does has a hard time.   The other leg has been operated on three years ago.   We bought a harness for three legged dogs but he just wants to lie down in his crate.

Any suggestions would be appreciated to get Rocky back to enjoying life.

  1. welcome. two months is quite a while…we’re guessing you’ve had him checked by a vet and here are no medical issues?? have you considered water therapy, massage, or other treatments. we had great luck with acupuncture and cold laser treatments for mobility issues with gayle and with her older sister jane. they do make specialized harnesses with a ‘rear handle’ to help hold up the hind end for pups with issues there…there are harness discussions in the tripawds gear section. very concerning for all of you, please consider searching the forums as well to see threads of other tripawd owners with rear leg issues.

oh, and we’d love some pictures and more back story on rocky!!

  2. Thanks for your information. We are keeping an eye on Rocky and hoping he is just having a bad day. The vet will check him if things continue as they are now. He had surgery seven months ago and got infection that never healed. Tried everything to get better and had no choice but to have the leg amputated to save him.

His other leg had surgery and he has a plate in it.
We have had Rocky since twelve weeks old. Lovely bullie. He has been through a lot with health issues re eye, allergies, leg surgery and now the amputation.

We posted a picture of him after the surgery. Hoping that he returns to his old ways.

  3. Awww – I’m sorry your boy’s having a ruff time. I don’t know what pain meds he’s on, but some seem to have extreme effects on personality. You might want to talk to your vet about changing the pain med.

I found food to be the best motivator for Baby. She also loves rides in the car. Would he like a car ride with a drive-through treat? We never gave junky food before surgery, but at this point, the occasional treat is just the thing to get her excited.

Good luck. I know it’s hard to watch your furbaby be sad. Hope he perks up soon.

  4. Rocky has one of those faces that just makes you smile. So sorry you are having some issues and I, unfortunately, do not have any advice for you. Please know that our thoughts are with your boy. Keep us posed!

  5. Poor Rocky! I’m so sorry. I hope it’s just a bad day too. We’ve had lots of Tripawds with previous leg surgeries go on to live healthy, hoppy lives after amputation, so don’t loose hope. It’s good you’re keeping in contact with your vet about him, but you may also want to find a certified canine rehab therapist to have him evaluated. This can make a HUGE difference in mobility. See our video series from California Animal Rehab for details. Keep us posted.

  6. Spring is here now so he can go out in the yard and perhaps once he gets use to three legs will improve gradually. We are not rushing him with anything. Will have him checked out in a while. There is a place that does water therapy so may check out that resource. Will look at the video series you mentioned and thanks for that.

Rocky is a strong bulldog and has had health issues from day one. It is too bad that an infection from a surgery caused an amputation. The dr. tried everything medication and the last one he was on was the last resort and it didn’t help. Hence the dr could not operate on the leg and had to amputate to get rid of the infection. Otherwise Rocky would not be with us. Three legged dog better than no dog. Family members and we also have another bullie named Amber. She is pretty healthy.
